What is SAFED?
SAFED is a complementary driver development course, consisting of assessment and training. It intends to improve the safe and fuel efficient driving skills of company drivers, and to complement a broader programme of safe, efficient, and economical vehicle fleet and driver management. As part of a Dept for Transport initiative, we as a registered SAFED training provider can offer (depending on the size of the company LCV van fleet), certified training for individual car or van drivers.
Why have Eco van or car driver training?
UK Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) activity accounted for some 34 billion miles (58b.kilometers) p.a. (Department for Transport, 2003). Over 90% of this distance was in connection with collection and delivery of goods, travel between home and workplace or journeys between working locations. Company cars also account for similar high annual mileages, and operating practices. Company Cars and Vans therefore play a vital and important role in the economy of the UK.
Safer driving means:-
- Reduced risk of injuries and fatalities on our roads
- Less accident damage to vehicles
- Less unproductive downtime for vehicle repair/maintenance
- Reduced risk of traffic rule transgressions
- Potential for reduced insurance premiums
- Reduced driver stress and fatigue
Fuel efficiency means:-
- Lower costs
- Improved market-place competitiveness
- Enhanced profit margins
- Reduced emissions
- Improved 'carbon foot print' environmental performance
- Reduced vehicle servicing costs
DFTP research suggest that where vehicle operators actively monitor and manage the fuel and driving style used by company vehicles and drivers', fuel consumption can typically be reduced by10% or more, with an equivalent cost saving. Use of safe and fuel-efficient driving techniques as part of fuel management will make a major contribution to this fuel saving.
